CreativePEI Arts: Accessibility and Barriers Report
The survey results present insights from artists and arts workers across Prince Edward Island on accessibility, participation barriers, and systemic challenges in the arts sector.
Many respondents identified with intersecting identities, including disability and neurodivergence, as well as 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, and racialized communities.
The findings highlight how inconsistent access, economic precarity, and past exclusionary experiences continue to influence who participates in artistic opportunities.
Guided by the Social Model for Disability, the survey focuses on identifying and removing societal, environmental, and systemic barriers rather than individual diagnoses or deficits.
Findings point to clear, achievable actions for the sector, including embedding accessibility by design, providing dedicated funding for access-related costs, offering disability-informed training, and centring artists with lived experience in decision-making.
Importantly, many of the most impactful accessibility solutions identified are low-cost and rooted in planning, training, and leadership practices rather than major infrastructure changes.
Open for engagement from March 1 to October 3, 2025, the survey received responses from 82 artists and arts workers spanning a wide range of ages, disciplines, locations, and career stages.
The interactive dashboard below shares key survey findings and is intended to support evidence-based decision-making, more inclusive policies and programs, and a stronger, more equitable arts sector across PEI.
